Thumbnails designed for the size they’re actually seen at
Your thumbnail competes at roughly 210 pixels wide, against eleven others, for about a second. We design for that reality — then use your own click-through data to work out what your audience responds to.
What actually drives the click
The thumbnail and title are a single unit. They shouldn’t say the same thing — the thumbnail should raise a question the title answers, or the other way round. Redundancy between them wastes the strongest asset you have.
Beyond that, a few things hold up consistently: legibility at small size (three or four words maximum, set very large), a clear focal point rather than a busy composition, contrast against YouTube’s interface in both light and dark mode, and a face with a readable expression where the content allows it.
And critically — consistency of style across a channel, so returning viewers recognise you in a crowded feed before they read anything.
What doesn’t work is copying whatever a large channel in your niche is doing. Their thumbnails work partly because their audience already knows them.
What’s included
- Custom thumbnail at 1280×720, under YouTube’s file size limit

- Title and thumbnail pairing advice — where they’re working against each other
- Two variations on request, for A/B testing where your channel has the feature
- Style system for channels ordering in bulk, so the channel reads as one thing
- Source file on request
- One revision round per thumbnail (two on bulk orders)

Bulk rates are materially lower per thumbnail, because a channel style established once carries across the batch.
FAQ
How much does a YouTube thumbnail cost?
Single thumbnails start at $30 each. Packs bring this down substantially — from $130 for five and $250 for ten. Monthly retainers for channels publishing regularly start at $300 per month for 8 thumbnails, which is the best rate and the most consistent result.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280×720 pixels at 16:9, under 2MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP. That’s the upload specification — but the number that matters is that it’s displayed as small as 210 pixels wide in the sidebar and on mobile. We check every thumbnail at that size before delivery, which is where most text-heavy thumbnails fall apart.
How quickly can you deliver?
Single thumbnails within 2 working days, often faster. Channels on a retainer typically get 24-hour turnaround on scheduled uploads, since the style system is already established and we’re working within it rather than deciding it fresh.
Do you do A/B testing?
We’ll design variations for you to test where your channel has thumbnail testing available, and we’ll interpret the results with you. Testing is only meaningful with enough view volume, so on smaller channels we’d usually recommend putting the effort into consistency instead.
Can you match my existing channel style?
Yes — send your best-performing thumbnails and we’ll work within that system. If your channel doesn’t have a consistent style yet, we’d recommend establishing one first: recognisability in the feed is worth more over time than any single thumbnail’s cleverness.
